Ian McMillan lives in his hometown in the Yorkshire Coalfield, where he grew up determined to write.
He developed a love of performance as a member of Barnsley's first folk-rock and folk-poetry groups, Oscar the Frog and Jaws. After a grant from Yorkshire Arts allowed him to go freelance, he worked in the Circus of Poets group, and the world's first mobile writing workshop Versewagon. In his own band, the Ian McMillan Orchestra, his words were set to music by fellow festival guest Luke Carver Goss. He has written for radio and theatre, been a poet in residence, and worked for Yorkshire Television and the BBC's cultural discussion programme Newsnight Review.
Today Ian presents The Verb, Radio 3's Cabaret of The Word, in which he interviews an eclectic range of guests about the best of new writing and performance. He writes weekly columns in the Yorkshire Post and Barnsley Chronicle.
